Exploration of Art Galleries in St. Louis

Gallery Artist Research Project:

Charles Houska

Houska Gallery

http://www.houska.com/

I met Charles at his gallery-home in St. Louis, MO. He moved here a couple years ago from Chicago where he started his artistic career as a graphic designer. He was pleasantly surprised to find his own art connecting with people, so he moved back to Springfield to work more on paintings, gradually moving on to St. Louis, MO. Besides his acryl-on-canvas artworks, Houska paints murals and fiberglass sculptures, his art appeared in a verity of forms, from credit cards to city buses.

Katerina Pyatakova

Saatchi Art

Katerina Pyatakova is originally from Ukrainian Artist. Her works are usual members of Ukrainian Art Galleries, she has a lot of art-exhibitions and awards . Katerina is a Member of Union of Artists of Ukraine and a Journeyer member of Pastel Guild of Europe.  Nowadays she works as teacher-volunteer of Art for children and young people in the Centre of Social and Psychological rehabilitation for children and youth with special needs.

James Hoff

Callicoon Fine Arts

James Hoof (b. 1975) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. His work encompasses paintings, sound, performance, and publishing among other media.
I chose these wall paintings made of copper and wax exhibited in Callicoon Fine Arts Gallery because they caught my eyes with a depth of shades. It is just copper but it looks like a full color painting with all the details.

Yoan Capote

Jack Shainman Gallery

http://www.jackshainman.com/artists/yoan-capote/

Yoan Capote uses sculpture, installation, photography and video to create analogies between the visual poetry of inanimate objects and the intangible world of the mind. he merges incongruos items, such as organs and mundane objects, to plumb ideas of humanity. I personally find some hints on politics and humor with a bit of cynical tone in Yoans' works and that adds a bit of courage to them.

Jenna Bauer

Houska Gallery

I met works of Jenna Bauer in Hauska Galley in St. Louis, MO. Very colorful and bright colors are striking and caught my eye first. She uses paintings and installations to illustrate nature and create visual effects. Besides her main job - art, she's teaching Art to non-art major students in Webster University.

What would you do with paper for 40 minutes?

In my first class we were given ONE piece of paper and a task to do whatever we want with it. We should have worked with it for 40 minutes non-stop.
40 minutes non-stop, Carl!
Some instruments were allowed: scissors and glue stick.

After time was up, I stopped and saw this:

In result: since I'm not an artist this work had a strong therapeutic influence on me. I find such work very good way to meditate.

So, what would you do with paper for 40 minutes? Post pics in comments.

Studio Art building at Webster University St. Louis

What is Studio Art? Theaster's influence.

Before I attended first Art's class in Webster University Studio Art was a very defined topic for me which meant, working in studio with different materials, exhibitions and late-night parties to expose works to friends and people of interest.
I took an introductory course to Studio Art in Webster and I expected up to discuss some art history and work with different materials like clay, wood, paints, etc. I was partially right. In this class we are going to discuss history and work with many different material but also we are going to talk art and find ways how to apply it in real life.

Theaster Gates is a great example of a modern artist who transform almost everything that comes to his hands into art. Among the materials he used to craft his works there are cars, all sorts of construction materials, old furniture, and of course more traditional materials like canvas, paints, and textile. His attitude to art is to combine emotional component, history and material to create pieces that can touch peoples feelings and memories.
